Webinar: Supporting multilingual classrooms

Thursday, 16 October 2025,
16:00 -17:15 (CET – Graz time)
  • Are you committed to the inclusion and integration of ALL your learners in schools and classrooms, regardless of their background?
  • Are you experiencing increasing numbers of children coming to school with languages other than the main language used in the school?
  • Do teachers, teacher trainers, policymakers and other colleagues involved in the education of 0–19-year-olds need to learn about new and effective, research-informed approaches to learning and teaching in increasingly multilingual classrooms in your context?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, then the webinar Supporting multilingual classrooms will be of interest to you.

The webinar will focus on ‚Supporting multilingual classrooms‘, an i nitiative of the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) and the European Commission which has, to date, conducted 81 training workshops to different target groups in 30 Member States of the European Union and the ECML on relating language curricula, tests and examinations to the CEFR in a valid and reliable way.

The long-term objective of our workshops is to enable learners with a migrant background – whether recently migrated or from long-established communities – to be better integrated into national education systems, leading to better educational achievement, which in turn will contribute to improved self-esteem, better employment prospects and a more cohesive and democratic society. The workshops enable member States to support the ambitious, inclusive approaches addressed in Recommendation CM/Rec(2022)1 of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on the importance of plurilingual and intercultural education for democratic culture, as well as in the European Council’s Recommendation (2019) on a comprehensive approach to the teaching and learning of languages

The webinar, as with the workshops, is not just aimed at language teachers. It involves a more holistic approach, addressing:

  • whole-school policies and strategies to support the integration of plurilingual learners
  • holistic approaches to language learning and teaching including the language of schooling, the language of schooling as a second language, foreign languages, home languages, regional/minority languages
  • challenges facing non-language teachers and how to adapt pedagogical approaches in all subjects to meet the needs of migrant learners

The webinar will provide insights into the ‚Supporting Multilingual Classrooms‘ workshops with inputs provided by the team as well as national representatives. We will explore the motivations for member States to host our workshops and how they have made a key contribution to curriculum and policy development and achieved impact in their various contexts.

The webinar will also offer the opportunity to interact with the moderators through posting questions in a chat function.

Translating conflict and refuge: language, displacement, and the politics of representation

Date: Friday 24 April 2026

Place: The University of Cambridge / part hybrid

Submission deadline for abstracts: 5 December 2025

Papers are invited for this one-day conference to take place in Cambridge (UK) next April.

Linguistic barriers exacerbate the already formidable challenges of responding to humanitarian crises, particularly—but not exclusively—in conflict zones. In the past decade alone armed conflicts worldwide have inflicted untold suffering on large populations and often resulted in mass displacement. Addressing the needs of those affected by war and violence necessitates the involvement of large numbers of translators and interpreters, many of whom are frequently untrained volunteers. In addition to the immediate crisis response, people with, or seeking, refugee and/or asylum seeker status require sustained access to translation and interpreting support in host countries, both in order to access basic services and to enable their integration into local communities.

This event will bring together translators, interpreters, scholars, NGO representatives, and volunteers to develop a deeper understanding of the complex demands and realities involved in translating conflict and refuge. Our aim is to create a space for meaningful exchange as well as to generate concrete opportunities for collaboration.

Plenary speakers:

Lucio Bagnulo (Amnesty International)

Federico Federici (UCL)

Rasheed Abdul Hadi (Damascus University)

Aline Larroyed (Dublin City University)

Yongcan Liu and Zach Denton (University of Cambridge)

Alison Phipps (University of Glasgow)

Plenary talks in the morning will be offered in hybrid format; afternoon sessions will be in-person only and will take the form of standard papers (15-minute talk + 5-minute Q&A).

We invite scholars, PhD students, practitioners, and those with direct experience of translation/interpreting in conflict areas or displacement to submit proposals for in-person afternoon sessions that address any of the following themes:

·        Challenges and ethical dilemmas of translating in conflict zones

·        The politics of language in conflict and displacement

·        Translating testimonies of conflict and refuge

·        AI and technology-enhanced translation in conflict zones

·        Creative translation: refugee voices in art and literature

If you are interested in offering a paper, please send the following by Friday 5 December 2025:

·        300-word abstract (in a Word document, please)

·        your name, contact email, and institution/professional area

All proposals should be sent to Ángeles Carreres (ac289@cam.ac.uk) and María Noriega-Sánchez (mn316@cam.ac.uk).

Accepted abstracts will be confirmed by 15 January 2026 and a draft programme will be available from 30 January.

Registration will open on 30 January 2026. Registration fees will cover in-person attendance to morning and afternoon sessions and refreshments:

Full in-person fee: £30
Concessionary in-person fee: £15 (Student/unwaged)

Registration fee for remote access to morning plenary sessions only: £10

Convenors:

To say that English has become an integral part of professional and academic contexts is as much of a cliche as it is an understatement. Let us then dig beyond these simplifications and discuss the many fascinating ways in which this language shapes the academia and professional world while being simultaneously shaped by its users of various backgrounds as they go about their daily business in these spheres.

Key themes for the papers and posters in the individual sections include:

  • new as well as well-established genres
  • intercultural communication
  • code-mixing and code-switching
  • pedagogical implications and best practices

and many more. See our topic areas for further information.

This year’s conference will focus on the evolving landscape of multilingualism, language policy, and professional communication in higher education, with particular attention to the impact of digital technologies and AI.

Call for papers for Fremdsprachen und Hochschule (Issue 103) on the topic: “Language centers as pioneers of internationalization”

Language centers play a central role in the internationalization of their universities. In a world shaped by globalization and transformation, they promote the linguistic and transcultural skills of students and staff, enable international understanding and networking in the academic world, and internationalize universities from within.

Cooperation with partner institutions worldwide gives rise to innovative teaching and learning formats that open up new perspectives on multilingualism and mobility. Digital technologies, hybrid exchange formats, and joint curricula contribute to rethinking and reshaping language education across national borders. At the same time, language centers face challenges: how can sustainable cooperations be established? Which didactic approaches and formats are particularly successful? How do language centers benefit from networks such as the European University Alliances?

This call for papers invites you to discuss current developments, best practices, and future prospects for international cooperation in language centers.

The editors of FuH welcome contributions of approximately 10 to 20 pages (20,000 to 40,000 characters) and best practice/project descriptions of approximately 5 to 10 pages (10,000 to 20,000 characters).

Contributions may be written in German or English. If you would like to submit your contribution in another language, please contact the editors.

All contributions will be subject to a double-blind peer review process. The editors reserve the right to return submitted articles to the authors for revision or to decline publication.

Reviews of relevant titles, 3 to 6 pages in length (6,000 to 12,000 characters), are also welcome. Book suggestions are encouraged by the editors. Reviews increase the visibility of books and connect authors with potential readers and other scholars. They reveal new perspectives and promote critical exchange.

Please follow the guidelines for manuscript preparation.

Submission deadline: December 31, 2025

Creation of a Focus Group on Plurilingualism within CercleS

We are pleased to announce the creation of a Focus Group dedicated to plurilingualism within CercleS. This initiative builds on the work of the FlexiLingua Group, an inter-university collective (Masaryk University, Université libre de Bruxelles, University of Fribourg) that has been active since 2019 in internationally oriented projects.

Our accomplishments include publications (CASALC Review, edited volumes), international conferences (Brno, 2022 and 2024), and collaborative Erasmus+ and Movetia programmes.

The aim of the Focus Group is to expand this network, share good practices, and strengthen synergies around plurilingualism in higher education. We invite interested members to join us and contribute to this collaborative initiative.

We are currently preparing an edited volume dedicated to plurilingual practices and warmly invite researchers and practitioners who are interested to contribute.

Open Call for Papers:

„Thinking, Practising and Living Plurilingualism“ ( Vol. 2, Mar 2026)

We invite submissions for an open-access e-book published by Masaryk University Press. The volume seeks research papers and analyses of experimental or best practices in plurilingualism.

  • Deadline for submission of full text: August 31, 2025
  • Languages: English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish
  • Length: 15,000–20,000 characters (including spaces)
